Umoja Arts Centre is the name of the facility that we used to operate in Arusha, Tanzania. The official names of our organisations operating in Tanzania are Umoja Music School and Community Arts Trust. We also have a non-profit umbrella organisation in the U.S. called Umoja Arts Project. All three of our organisations have been set up to provide music education for people of all ages (although mainly children) in all sectors of society. We are also very committed to providing arts enrichment experiences such as workshops, concerts, and cross-arts and cross-cultural exchanges with the aim of empowerment and intellectual development.
In Arusha, we have around 100 students who are enrolled in regular weekly classes and offer instruction on violin, viola, cello, piano, voice, flute, guitar and drums as well as traditional Tanzanian music and dance. These programmes are currently run in three different schools throughout the Arusha area. We also have strong partnerships with other local organisations working in the arts and education sectors, including Makumira University music department, offering one of the only Bachelor of Music degrees in the whole of Tanzania.
