National Youth Orchestra of Seychelles

The National Youth Orchestra of Seychelles was inaugurated in 2016. It operates under the auspices of the National Conservatoire of Performing Arts, which is part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The Conservatoire offers individual instrument lessons, and the NYOS then brings these young musicians together to give them experience in playing together, either as a full orchestra or in smaller ensembles. It currently has around 15 members, but it is growing steadily as individual musicians reach an appropriate  standard.

The repertoire is varied — currently we are working on pieces by Beethoven, Michael Nyman and the Penguin Cafe Orchestra — in order to introduce the young players to a range of musical styles. To widen their experience further, they also provide orchestral accompaniment to a local youth pop group, playing numbers such as Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus and Problem by Ariana Grande.

The Conservatoire has also recently launched a pilot Music in Schools project, to enhance the teaching of music in the public school system. Part of the aim of this initiative is to increase the number of young musicians who go on to join the orchestra.

The NYOS is still very much in its infancy, but watch this space!
