The Antigua and Barbuda National Youth Choir

The Antigua and Barbuda National Youth Choir from when it was formed in 2004 and currently has been very fortunate to have Ms. Renée Smith as its Director.

The choir was started as a part of an initiative plan for youth development to gather a group of young people, from all across the nation, who were interested in singing and wanted a positive way to occupy their time and minds, and use their talent. Through the hard work and dedication, of both the leadership and the singers, the choir made its debut performance at the ‘2004 Youth Rally’ program. From it first performance the choir has been leaving lasting impressions on all its audiences wherever it performs.

The choir’s first production was in Easter of 2005 - ‘The Cross’, which was followed by ‘Christmas Calls for a Celebration’ in 2006, ‘See it Yah’ in 2008, ‘Rhythms’ in 2011, and ‘Seasons of Love’ 2012.

The choir has also given several performances across the region. In 2008 it was one of two selected choirs to represent Antigua and Barbuda in Carifesta X in Guyana. This was its first ambassadorial trip, and its performance there was featured on the front page of Guyana’s leading newspaper.

It did not stop there and through hard work, vision, and a confidence in what they could offer, the choir accomplished a relationship with Presidents’ College of Trinidad and in summer 2011 it was invited to give concerts all over Trinidad.

In March of 2013 the choir travelled to Dominica where they again wowed the audience there with their performance of the production ‘Seasons of Love’.

In the summer of 2013 the choir travelled to Suriname as a part of the delegation that represented Antigua at Carifesta XI. As is their custom, the choir’s performance showed its talent, professionalism and it were one of three choirs to perform at the closing ceremony for that Carifesta.

In addition to putting on its own productions, the choir also performs at all national events, and at select private functions. It contributes to the wonderful experience that tourists have in Antigua by putting on performances at most of the major hotels on the island.

In 2014 the Antigua and Barbuda National Youth Choir celebrated its 10 year anniversary with the theme ‘A Decade of Greatness’. There were several performances held throughout the year, including a Negro Spiritual concert, ‘Mahaley Wano’, and on 27th December 2014 a black tie event, ‘The Year Ten’. All the choir’s performances received excellent reviews.

The choir looks forward to continuing to serve Antigua & Barbuda in a very distinguished and professional manner. The Leadership of the choir hopes that this group will continue to provide a safe haven for young musically talented persons where they will have the opportunity to develop and use their talent in a positive and meaningful way.
